Let's take you back to
humble beginnings

Martina Barrett and Jacqui Querns are the founding members of VAKs Tuition. They came together when their daughters attended the same nursery in 2012.

Martina is an early years trained specialist and Jacqui had a career in Sales and service for many years.

Over coffee mornings they found they both had a passion for education. Martina had a tutoring Company and embarked on rebranding it into VAKs Tutoring.

Where it all started
2012

VAKs was founded by two mums with the vision to alter the lives of young minds

We choose the name as VAKs as it’s a learning style, from a model of learning designed by Walter Burke Barbe and later developed by Neil Fleming.

The VAK learning model divides people into three categories of learner and stands for:

Visual
Auditory
Kinaesthetic

Visual learners

Engage information by sight

Auditory learners

Engage information by sound

Kinaesthetic learners

Engage information by moving

In the beginning we employed two additional senior education specialists who had a wealth of knowledge in English and Maths. Together we embarked on creating a bespoke learning programme with a team of individuals, all who played major roles in our conception.

VAKs was born.

Initially we started in St Albans. Over the coming months we opened Centres in Hertford, Bishops Stortford, Finchley and Luton.

In March 2020 we like many other Companies were forced to close our doors for what the country was told would be 2 weeks to flatten the curve.

Online learning was something we had toyed with but hadn’t quite managed to evolve. Full praise goes to Taylor Thompson and the Tech team who worked tirelessly to create us an online learning platform, for us to continue supporting children through the first lockdown.

We have continued to have great success stories with the children we have tutored over the last two years.

Our future aim is to offer both face to face and continue to tutoring online.

What makes us different?

Unlike other tuition providers we don’t offer a tutor matching service. We understand scrolling through hundreds of “teachers” can be overwhelming and leave you in the dark.

We keep a small team of inspiring hand-picked tutors who run interactive weekly sessions.

We teach individuals in small groups which encourages peer to peer participation, collaboration and develops friendships.

We offer exceptional study programmes tailored to meet the individual needs of your child, whatever their ability or aspirations. We provide expert mentoring and coaching for all students giving them the opportunity to increase their confidence and reach their full academic potential, whether that may be a short-term boost in a specific subject, or to focus on the necessary skills to ensure exam success at every level.

Our team is highly skilled in the specific preparation of children sitting 11 Plus entrance examination for both Grammar and Private Schools. We are enormously proud of our outstanding results year on year, 100% have achieved their top three choice of schools.
